About the Recipe

Coming out of the lab with an off-the-cuff inspiration, this is essentially a Chinese style rice with non-traditional ingredients that take it to new heights. If you want to add something different to your holiday dinners, this is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Ingredients

  • 1 batch of “Steamed Long Grain Rice"

  • 2 pre-cooked chicken breasts or turkey (about 315 grams), diced into ½ to 1 cm cubes

  • 1 ½ cups of pre-cooked black beans

  • 2 medium sized onions (about 240 grams), diced into ½ to 1 cm cubes

  • 240 grams of slivered savoy cabbage, cut into 3-4 cm long slivers about ½ cm thick

  • 1 ½ cups of fresh or frozen green peas (allow frozen peas to thaw before using)

  • 1 red bell pepper (about 180 grams), diced into 1.5 to 2 cm cubes

  • 2-3 cloves of garlic (about 18 grams), finely chopped

  • 2 green onions (about 29 grams), chopped into ½ to 1 cm pieces

  • â…“ cup of peanut oil

  • 2 tablespoons of salted butter

  • ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons of naturally brewed, light soy sauce

  • ½ teaspoon of umami powder (MSG / Accent)

  • ¼ teaspoon of salt

Preparation

  • Pour the oil into a large non-stick pot or a wok and add the butter.

  • Set the temperature to medium-high.

  • Put a few pieces of chopped garlic in the pot/wok to serve as a temperature gauge.  Once the garlic, browns, the desired temperature has been reached.

  • Once the oil has heated, beat the eggs and add them to the pot.

  • Using a spatula, move the eggs around as you are cooking them to fluff them up more.

  • Using a spatula, cut the cooked egg into bite sized pieces.

  • Add the onions and peas then stir-fry for about 2 minutes, or until the onions are glazed.

  • Add the cabbage and stir-fry for about 3 minutes, then add about ¼ teaspoon of salt.

  • Add the black beans, peppers and remaining garlic, then stir-fry for 2-3 minutes.

  • Add the chicken and stir fry just enough to evenly distribute it.

  • Add the rice and stir fry for about 3 minutes, or until all the rice is well blended with the ingredients.

  • Add the umami powder and soy sauce then stir-fry for about one minute.

  • Add the green onions and stir-fry for a few seconds.

  • Serve.
